What is Wisdom Teeth Removal?
Wisdom teeth often aren’t problematic if they have enough room to come up and through the gums. Unfortunately, most patients don’t have enough room for these third molars to come into place, so they become impacted and can have an effect on your overall oral health. In order to prevent future problems with pain, swelling and infection, we often recommend removing impacted or otherwise problematic wisdom teeth. We aim to make the procedure as comfortable and quick as possible in our office.
Why would Wisdom Teeth Removal be needed?
If you leave impacted wisdom teeth alone, they can and will eventually cause problems to your oral health. Over time, these teeth can become painful and infected, causing abscessing that requires antibiotics to clear. They may even push against surrounding teeth in an attempt to come through the gums, which can cause overcrowding and damage to other molars. It’s best to have them removed as soon as you’ve been told they are a problem.
Who is a candidate for Wisdom Teeth Removal?
To determine if your wisdom teeth need to be removed, we’ll take x-rays. An x-ray known as a panoramic is often the most useful when it comes to identifying wisdom teeth and understanding their location. If you need your wisdom teeth removed, it’s a good idea to have the procedure done before these teeth pose a problem to your oral health. There is no age limit when it comes to when you can have them removed, and it’s not uncommon for patients to need them removed because they’re already causing trouble.
What happens during the Wisdom Teeth Removal process?
The procedure begins with an anesthetic that is used to numb different areas of your mouth. Sedation can be used to further relax you during surgery. We make an incision through the gums and then remove the underlying wisdom tooth. We then place sutures to close up the gums before going on to work on the next wisdom tooth. You will be given important aftercare instructions that must be followed to ensure your mouth heals properly. Some pain and swelling is to be expected for a few days following surgery.
