Dental Implants in La Palma

What are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is designed to replace one or more missing teeth in your mouth. Implants are different in that they replace both the lower portion (roots) and upper portion (crown) of a missing tooth. Implants are embedded deep into the jawbone and given time to integrate and fuse with the bone itself. Once bonded, a specially made crown, bridge or overdenture can be placed over the top of the implant.

Why would Dental Implants be needed?

The reason you might need a dental implant is because you’re missing one or more of your natural teeth. Rather than place a dental bridge, which would compromise surrounding teeth, an implant can be placed and used to hold onto a crown. Implants are essential when it comes to filling in your smile as well as restoring the overall functioning of your mouth. It’ll be easier to chew and eat when you have all of your teeth, and you’ll feel more confident in the way that you look.

Who is a candidate for Dental Implants?

In order for an implant to heal properly, it needs enough healthy, solid bone where it will be placed. If you’re missing bone, which is common when a tooth has been missing for a long period of time, a bone grafting is necessary. Bone grafting involves placing synthetic or donor bone in the area where it is missing. You should be healthy enough to undergo oral surgery prior to coming in for the procedure.

What happens during the Dental Implant procedure?

We start by numbing the area of the mouth receiving the implant. We then make an incision through the gums and insert the titanium implant deep into the jawbone. The implant is given time to heal, usually three to six months, before a restoration is placed over top of it. If you’re missing just one tooth, a specially made crown can be placed on top of the implant. If you’re missing multiple teeth, a bridge or denture can be placed over the freshly healed implant to restore your smile.
