What is a Tooth Extraction?
Tooth extractions are often necessary to help prevent future oral health problems. Extractions involve completely removing a tooth from a patient’s mouth. The tooth might be severely damaged or compromised, or it might pose a threat to the surrounding teeth. Regardless of why an extraction might be needed, we aim to make the procedure as comfortable and quick as possible for you.
Why might a Tooth Extraction be needed?
There are a few reasons for why you or a loved one might need an extraction. The most common reason for needing an extraction is because a tooth is loose, severely decayed or broken far below the gum line. In other instances, a tooth may be impacted or is posing a risk to other teeth, as you might find with many wisdom teeth. For pediatric patients, their baby teeth may not be falling out on their own, which can impact the permanent teeth underneath trying to come in.
Who is a candidate for a Tooth Extraction?
To determine if you might need an extraction, we will examine your teeth and take x-rays. If you need an extraction, it is best to have the procedure done as soon as possible to prevent further damage to your oral health. If possible, we can help to find ways to replace the tooth once it’s been removed. Our goal is to provide you with a healthy smile that doesn’t involve pain or discomfort.
What happens during the Tooth Extraction process?
The extraction process will begin with an anesthetic that is used to numb one whole area of the mouth. We then use specialized tools to loosen and then lift the tooth out of its underlying socket. Once this is done, we will place sutures if they are needed. You’ll bite down on a piece of gauze to stop any and all bleeding. We then provide you with aftercare instructions so that you are able to care for the surgical site after leaving the office. The procedure is done quickly and easily in our office at your own convenience.
